It still amazes me that the building stood for as long as they did. The Construction of the World Trade Center was unlike any building ever build. You had the Central Core of the building that housed the elevators and water and power and then the outer walls, leaving you with a huge amount of floor space.
Sadly this building unique design as also what doomed it on September 11. Once the Outer Shell of the building was compromised the weight was redistributed to the other outer walls and the central core. As the fire continued to burn uncontrolled floors began to sag and give way weakening the outer walls and placing more load upon the central core of the building.
When the Towers fell it was due to the fact that the central core of the towers finial gave way, which is why people still think to this day that the building had to be demoed, when it was just due to the buildings unique design.
Same can be said for World Trade Center 7, it was build over a power substation and had a unique skeleton. But after several hours of fires burning uncontrolled it weakened this unique design and the building fell over. the part that gave way was right above the substation. Again No demo just unique design.
