Kenneth Davis today joined World Trade Center (WTC) first responders, labor union leaders, community groups, physicians and others at a ribbon cutting event at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City to celebrate the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act taking effect.
Signed into law in early January, the Zadroga Act provides sustained funding for the WTC Centers of Excellence and ensures that those facing 9/11-related health problems continue to receive monitoring and treatment through at least 2015. The law takes effect today, July 1, 2011….
America Saves National Honor as Senate Passes Long-Overdue Zadroga Health Bill for 9/11 Responders
The bill will also reopen the federal Victim Compensation Fund to provide economic relief to those harmed by the attacks. Earlier today, the Senate passed an amended version of the bill that reduces the bill’s cost to $4.3 billion over five years. A summary of the Senate’s changes can be found below.
The bill, sponsored by New York Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), and Peter King (R-NY), with the support of the entire New York Congressional delegation, will now be sent to President Obama’s desk. The President has said that he supports and will sign the legislation. The passage of H.R. 847 represents a victory for ailing 9/11 first responders and survivors who have waited more than nine years for the federal government to approve a comprehensive plan to deal with the public health disaster caused by the attacks…

Nine Years Later: Health Effects in World Trade Center Responders, with Philip Landrigan
9.1.10. by Ashley Ahearn, ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PERSPECTIVES–As many as 70,000 volunteers and rescue workers responded to the 11 September 2001 World Trade Center (WTC) attacks, many toiling for months to clear mountains of debris containing a range of toxic compounds. Health effects seen since that time in WTC responders include respiratory, gastrointestinal, chemosensory, and mental health problems; many of these effects have persisted for years. In this podcast, Philip Landrigan discusses his work with WTC responders as a physician and an epidemiologist and how lessons learned from the WTC cleanup may be applied to other disasters. 9/11 Health Alert: NOW is Time to Voice Concerns about WTC Medical Monitoring by Rhonda Villamia
Dear WTC Community Member,
Treatment Program and/or Centers of Excellence, I initiated an effort to communicate them to the program directors Drs Jacqueline Moline & Michael Crane. I also reached out to the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH), who in collaboration with the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (ATSDR) created the WTC Health Registry in July 2002.
Over the subsequent months, I posted email requests for input from the 9/11 community via direct contact to persons on my e-list, or through various WTC-related groups. I asked for people to contact me with their list of concerns & any attempts made to communicate their concerns directly to Mt. Sinai or the Centers of Excellence via email or letters. Obama comes out in Favor of 9/11 Health Bill: Pres. to sign Zadroga Bill into Law
8.18.10 by Richard Sisk & Samuel Goldsmith, NY DAILY NEWS–Washington–In a breakthrough for 9/11 first responders, President Obama ended his silence on the Zadroga Bill on Wednesday and backed the uphill drive to get it through Congress.
“The President looks forward to signing the 9/11 health bill into law, once it passes both houses of Congress, to help the first responders whose health and livelihood were devastated by the events of Sept. 11,” a White House statement said. Judge OKs Proposed Ground Zero Settlement
6.23.10 by John Riley NEWSDAY–U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein Wednesday approved a proposed $625 million to $712 million settlement of health claims from Ground Zero responders after an emotional seven-hour hearing in which he frequently sympathized with critics of its imperfections.
“I intend to approve the settlement and I now do so as a fair, reasonable and adequate settlement,” Hellerstein told a packed courtroom in federal court in Manhattan after hearing from a parade of more than 30 lawyers and claimants. “It is fair in amount, it is fair in procedure.”
The judge vetoed a less generous deal between the city, its insurer and plaintiffs’ lawyers in March. To take effect, at least 95 percent of the 10,000 police officers, firefighters and other workers who claim they suffered illnesses from post-Sept. 11 rescue and cleanup efforts must sign up by Sept. 30…

The 9/11 Health Crisis
On September 11, 2001, tens of thousands of Americans converged on New York City’s World Trade Center site in one of the most impassioned rescue and recovery efforts in the history of the country. Unbeknownst to these American patriots, the conditions at Ground Zero–in spite of Federal and State warnings to the contrary–were exceedingly toxic: hundreds of contaminants, including asbestos, lead, mercury and benzene–to name a few-were present in unprecedentedly high levels, both within the billowing dust cloud that settled over Lower Manhattan and the surrounding areas, and in the emissions from the pile that smoldered for months afterward during the cleanup… Read More…

“I became an advocate once I realized I have a choice,” Feal declares. “I can sit around and feel sorry for myself, or I can fight back and help others.” Mention politics, and John bristles: “With power, comes responsibility: as elected officials, you’re elected to serve and protect. Well, 90% of our country’s leaders are not serving and protecting, and 9/11 heroes are dying because of it.” Feal continues: “As a country, we took one on the chin on September 11. We got knocked down, but we bounced back up to move forward. But in the process of moving forward, we forgot what we left behind. And that’s about 40,000 people that are sick and dying…”

Article 19 of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights
ARTICLE 19. Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers. (The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948)
“A cantankerous press, an obstinate press, an ubiquitous press, must be suffered by those in authority in order to preserve the even greater values of freedom of expression and the right of the people to know,” Judge Gurfein declared. “These are troubled times. There is no greater safety valve for discontent and cynicism about the affairs of government than freedom of expression in any form.” (Excerpt from a New York Times editorial of June 20, 1971, in The Pentagon Papers, 1971, p. 645)
