How long will this drought last?
The 2012 drought could very likely last the rest of this year according to meteorologist Greg Soulje. That would most definitely continue crop and livestock stress as well as put pressure on next year’s spring planting.

“Atmosphere doesn’t really know what direction to go on. There’s no real driving force. This could be something that plays out in a fall and winter sense that people might forget about but there may be an absence of moisture as well over many Heartland locations deeper into fall and winter,” says Soulje.
That would make it an 18-month drought for much of the Corn Belt, longer for Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Soulje says the most dominant drought areas will continue to be the Central, Western and Southwestern sections of the Corn Belt. However, he adds, there could be some relief, moisture wise, for the far Eastern Corn Belt.
