The agriculture industry in Indiana contributes roughly $26 billion annually to the state’s economy and employs nearly 17 percent of the work force. With over 50 percent of the state categorized as a D3, or extreme drought, Lt. Governor Becky Skillman, the state’s Secretary of Agriculture says they are monitoring the current conditions. “We’re concerned about a blow to this industry, that quite frankly, kept our state strong during some very tough economic times,” she says.
Lt. Governor Skillman says they are taking a day by day approach. “Things change nearly over night,” she says. “So we’re just trying to get as much assistance as possible to an industry that has been a critical part to our state’s economy.”
The state has launched a drought information website for up to date information. You can find it HERE
