Monday, July 9th Scott Docherty, General Manager for East Central Illinois based Top Flight Grain Cooperative had several farmers at his grain elevator with concerns about a corn crop that may or may not be there. “We suggested to everyone that either called or stopped in to go out in their fields and do some counts,” he says. “We said to make sure they went into all their fields because there is going to be a huge variation from field to field (and even within a field).”
Docherty tells Brownfield farmers that yield checked fields were pleasantly surprised. “We asked them what that meant,” he says. “They told us certain fields they walked into may have 50 to 80 bushel corn and other fields they walked into were anywhere from 140 to 160.”

After evaluating the situation – at this time – Docherty says only about 10 percent of their customers are oversold on their grain contracts for this fall.
He says farmers that are concerned about their ability to fulfill their grain contracts, should be working closely with their elevators to find a solution.
