Senate Ag Chair Debbie Stabenow of Michigan is praising the Obama administration for its response to the drought to help farmers and ranchers while she’s critical of House leaders for adjourning before dealing with a five year farm bill. At the White House Rural Council convened by President Obama Tuesday, more assistance for farmers was announced.
The Senate passed its version of a bipartisan farm bill in June – which contains key disaster assistance – and the House Ag Committee advanced a bipartisan farm bill last month that leadership had not scheduled for floor debate before the congressional August recess.
Stabenow says “the real burden rests on Congress” to get a farm bill passed which she says farmers and ranchers agree “is better than a limited disaster bill” – referring to the pared down disaster aid bill the House passed just before going on its break.
Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack was in Michigan this week with Senator Stabenow to talk with farmers about the drought.
