NALEO’s Statement on Texas’ Court-Drawn Redistricting Map

The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund issued the following statement regarding the release of the Texas congressional redistricting map by the federal district court for the 2012 election cycle:

“The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund commends the federal court’s release of a new map for Texas’ Congressional districts.  The court-drawn map creates new districts which will provide Texas’ Latino community with improved opportunities for fair representation in the electoral process.

“Latinos accounted for 65% of Texas’ growth last decade, which resulted in the state gaining four additional Congressional seats.  The Congressional map enacted by the state legislature did not reflect this growth, and would have severely violated Latino voting rights.  We are pleased to see the results of the court challenge that produced the new Congressional plan, and we urge the court to order these maps into law.”
