Last night the mayor of La Piedad, Michoacan, Ricardo Guzman Romero, was campaigning for the PAN Party when he was brutally executed.
Accompanied by about 20 young people, the PAN mayor was hanging a banner in support of Luisa María Calderón, known as Cocoa and who is running for governor of Michoacán, and who is also the sister of President Felipe Calderon.
As they were hanging the banner a Jeep Liberty truck arrived at the scene, where several gunmen exited the vehicle. They charged at the mayor and opened fire killing him instantly. The criminals were then able to flee.
Romero Guzmán was also coordinator of the PAN mayors in Michoacan, and was regarded as a very active member within the Party National Action.
For his part, Jesus Montejano, head of the Attorney General in Michoacan said they were unaware that the mayor had been threatened by organized crime.
State officials have already begun investigations, seeking support from neighboring states of Jalisco and Guanajuato.
The official also said that on the streets where the execution took place, there are surveillance cameras, noting that the security videos will be analyzed for any evidence they may provide.
