Thanks to Pilar Oceana for putting this incident on our radar via CopBlock.org/submit
What do we know? That, after a short foot chase Luis Armando Contrera was shot in the face by Thomas Keener, employed by the Napa Police Department. Contrera was left in a coma while Keener is on a paid vacation (aka “administrative leave”).
Thus far the police and the employees of the Napa County Sheriff’s Department, which is supposedly investigating the incident, have failed to disclose the reason for the shooting.
And rather than question the tactics used by those who purport to “serve and protect” a local news outlet instead added a bit of unrelated information: “Contreras has had run-ins with law enforcement over the past few years, court records indicate” and that he at one time had an immigration hold, but that his previous charge had been dismissed.
Does previous run-ins with law enforcement establish guilt in those situations? I know plenty of people, myself included, that have had run-ins with law enforcement and without exception it’s been them in the wrong. Also, why mention charges that were dismissed? Won’t that only bias readers? And what relevance does “an immigration hold” bear in this situation? Again, it only helps to paint the person now in a coma as a criminal when the simple fact is that crossing an arbitrary political boundary creates no victim.
Another news outlet noted that “There is nothing to indicate that Contrara shot at the officer.” Nor is there any evidence that he had a firearm.
Let’s see how this investigation goes – a Napa PD employee being investigated by Napa Co. Sheriff Dept employees…
