Today, a question from a reader:
“Thank you for your articles and website. They have been real helpful to my family and I. My husband and I have just started stocking up on supplies because of what is currently happening in our country.
“The question I have for you is this, my husband and I are unable to purchase a survival retreat like I have seen through various research on the web. We are sort of stuck unable to sell our old house because of the housing market. We have two mortgages to pay.
“I notice that a lot of people suggest having a place to go. Unfortunately we do not have any family away from the city that would even be on board. A lot of them praise Obama. We just don’t see eye to eye when it comes to our country.
“Do you think it would be wise in case of disaster if we packed up our gear and headed to a free camping ground? Do you think other people would be there trying to rob us of our supplies?
“I am trying to put together a plan in case we have to leave our city. If we were to stay in our urban area it may not be safe because of where our house is situated. We’re a corner house on a frequented street. I guess I am worried about looters and such.
“Our backyard is exposed to our neighbors so we cannot grow a garden back there without everyone knowing about it. Both my husband and I would rather take our two year old and gear and get away from any chaos that might happen.
“Any suggestions for our situation?”
That’s a tough question.
One strategy I’m using is to develop friendships with my neighbors and other survivalists in my community. Ultimately, it will be easier to survive long-term in a home than at a campground (depending on where in the country you live, of course).
I live in Colorado. There are really only three months out of the year when camping is feasible. The rest of the year would be too snowy and cold, especially with young children.
Staying at a campground might be a good short-term plan if you expect civil unrest in your city or town — and you expect it to happen during warmer weather. Although your house may be damaged while you are gone depending on the level of violence and looting that takes place. (Think New Orleans.)
The key would be to find a campground that is secluded and rarely visited. If you do meet other people there, I would expect they would be like-minded. I do not expect looting to happen at secluded campgrounds (at least not in the beginning). I do expect there to be camaraderie and a sense of community.
Generally speaking, good people pull together in hard times.
Either way, you may at some point need to come back to your home if the crisis lasts longer than two or three weeks. It’s at that point that good relationships within your community could go a long way toward your safety and security.
But keep in mind: If things get worse while you’re away, it may be difficult if not impossible to get back to your home. What if gas is hard to come by? What if the city has been locked down such that nobody can get in? (Many people who wanted to help the people of New Orleans were turned away and not permitted to proceed past FEMA road blocks.)
One resource I recommend for people who don’t have a survival retreat is called “Survive In Place” by David Morris. The basic premise is that most people won’t be able to leave their homes in a crisis. Therefore, David’s course is all about how to survive in your home.

Nowhere is safe. But some places are LESS safe than others. The key to surviving at home to hide in plain sight. Hollywood is a superb example of using “staging” “props” “backgrounds” to suspend belief and trick your mind… study the arts.
Remember, thieves strikes “EASY” targets. Easy targets are EXPOSED valuables easily seen or located. Your job… make it hard for them so they move on the even “easier” prey.
As feasible, use strategic “hedging” “bushes” “flowers” “plants” in your yard and plant your garden inside them. From a distant, they will look decorative while bearing food for your family. Plant whatever berries, small fruit trees you can too. Be careful of over shading everything.
Use decorative drapery / tapestry to hang in front of a closet filled with food & water so it looks like a wall. Remove the doorknob so it doesn’t distort the “lay” of the fabric.
Hide food/water under beds… then use flat black paint (not shiny) to paint a long piece of wood to place in front of the supplies… set back at least a foot. Why? Thieves will look under the bed and see nothing… literally… black doesn’t register easily in the human eye…it’s used everywhere.
A clean home is a sure sign someone is still living there, thus exploitable. Keep it clean for hygenic reasons but adding boards to windows, fake broken glass, flat black painted plywood mounted to windows will go a long way to making your house “unappealing” which is what you want.
Setting up a cooperative neighborhood venture to watch, prep food and defend each other is superb. Teach others the value of “Stone Soup.” A long time ago, three starving soldiers came to a very selfish village and asked for food and got none.
They found an old kettle, filled it with water and plopped several large stones into it… and watched it cook. As the worried villagers watched on, their curiosity got the best of them. One by one they came out and asked the soldiers what they were doing. With a smile, they said they were making Stone Soup… but something was missing… it wasn’t quite right yet. Each person took a taste and recommended an ingredient to add… and said, “I just happen to have some and ran back to fetch it.” Over the course of a few hours, those three stones were followed by carrots, potatoes, beans, celery, salt, seasoning and meat. When finished, the soldiers shared their soup with everyone. But more importantly, they taught them, when we stop being selfish and pull together to help our neighbors… we can do anything!
This is a terribly selfish generation that has lost its way. But God is still with us all, even in disaster. He NEVER lets down those who place their trust in him. He takes what little we have and somehow always makes it enough. Just don’t ask me how… and that would include protecting & providing us in a post-american fall.
Faith, Creativity & Boldness are a formidable force to reckon with…
