We pause today to commemorate a life well lived. Dr. Ray Russell was a devoted husband and father, a doctor of veterinary medicine, a man active in scouting, the civic arena and deeply committed to his LDS faith.
Information regarding his memorial service can be found here.
We note his passing with sadness, but also with fond memories. Those recollections raise a “What if” moment for those who knew this exceptionally decent man. Although his obituary omits the fact, Ray Russell also had a deep commitment to his community that ultimately led him to politics.
In 1982, respected Arizona U.S. Rep. and House Minority Leader John J. Rhodes, a Harvard Law School grad, retired from Congress after 30 years in what was then Arizona’s First Congressional District in the East Valley. The Republican primary to succeed him featured four candidates in a hotly contested race. Arizona newcomer and former Vietnam POW John McCain was recruited to run. Ray Russell, well known and admired in the district, also entered the race, along with two former state legislators, James Mack and Donna Carlson-West.
Dr. Ray Russell lost to John McCain by a slim 5+ percentage points.
Today when we focus on so many other aspects of this fine man’s exemplary life, it’s difficult not to pause and wonder what might have been if a few more voters had gotten out to the polls on that September day in 1982.
