Ecuadorian Embassy Receives Letter from UK Asking to Resume Talks About Julian Assange

Yesterday the Ecuadorian Embassy in London received a letter from the British Foreign Ministry asking to resume talks about the asylum of Julian Assange.

Assange, 40, was out on bail and fighting extradition to Sweden after being arrested in London in December 2010 at Sweden’s request, as they wished to speak with him regarding the alleged sexual assaults of two women.  He sought political asylum from Ecuador in June.

Ecuador said it is open to dialogue with Britain if it first withdraws the “threat” of storming the Andean nation’s embassy in London to arrest the founder of WikiLeaks, to whom Quito granted political asylum two weeks ago.

The content of the letter has not been disclosed and both countries continue to have opposing views on Assange and his asylum.  The UK government has vowed to arrest the internet hacker as soon as he steps outside the embassy grounds.
