Two Brazilian prisoners were recently caught trying to escape in garbage bags.
Carlos Pereira, 19, and Sidney da Cruz, 24, were attempting to get out of Brazil’s Delegacia de Furtos jail in Curitiba disguised as bags of garbage.
Shortly after lunchtime, the men climbed into garbage bags and placed themselves next to the lunchtime trash.
Their plan was foiled however when a prison guard noticed the bags were “breathing.” Though he first thought it was rats, but quickly realized the bags contained people, not garbage.
Authorities are still investigating how the bags were tied if the men were inside them. It is possible a prison employee aided in their attempted escape.
Pereira and da Cruz are just the latest to try to escape this southern Brazil prison, which is said to be overcrowded.
Even if the prison guard had not seen the bags move, it is still likely the men would have been caught, considering the regular trash is nowhere near as heavy as fully grown men.
The men were serving time at Delegacia de Furtos jail for car theft and possibly face additional charges and time in jail.
