First came news in February that Los Angles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was chosen to lead the Democratic National Convention (DNC) now San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro has been selected to give a keynote speech at the DNC.
The DNC will kick off on September 4 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Both First Lady Michelle Obama and Castro will speak on opening night. This will be the first time a Latino gives a key address at the convention. The 37-year-old Mexican-American mayor is considered a rising star of the party and is key for Obama’s Latino voter outreach.
Interestingly, back in 2004 then Illinois Senator Obama was given the same opportunity to give this opening keynote speech where the world was introduced to him.
Villaraigosa became the second Latino in history to chair the DNC, the first being former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson in 2004. Mexican-American Villaraigosa, 59-years-old, is also one of Obama’s 2012 campaign co-chairs.
