(Before It's News)

The Town Hall on "restricting the Second Amendment was  very interesting with numerous people there to express their ideas. Around twenty people attended and the views were diverse and passionate.

Our meeting started with a four minute segment from Fareed Zarkaria's CNN GPS show on Sunday where he presented comparisons with other country's as to crime, deaths and guns. http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2012/07/27/time-to-face-facts-on-gun-control/?iref=allsearch

I asked if anyone thought that private individuals should be allowed to own nuclear weapons under the Second Amendment and one guy who was carrying a pistol strapped to his hip said that nukes should be allowable. Discussion then flowed to the actual wording of the Second Amendment which reads: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Discussion then moved to several attendees comparing countries who outlawed guns under tyrannical regimes that they said resulted in the deaths of millions of people world wide but that became a contentious issue as one man said that their assumptions that the deaths resulted from a single fact of gun bans were wrong.

Several people got up and left the meeting when one man who claimed to merely show his weapon to stop two life threatening situations said that Obamacare required kids to tell their doctors if their parents had weapons in their homes. He claimed that was a step by Obama to begin seizure of private weapons in order to create a police state.

Of course, religion, particularly Christianityand its lack thereof, was brought up as the driving force behind the massacre in Aurora, CO a couple of weeks ago.

Some of the discussion surrounded the fact that one man showed up with his pistol holstered at his side. One person in the audience questioned why he would be so paranoid and he claimed that since it was his right, he would do it. Up until 2011, it was illegal to carry either concealed or open weapons in public building like a library but a State Senate Bill from that year was passed allowing for this sort of thing to occur.

All in all, the discussion was interesting and its too bad that more progressives did not show up to give their opinions. These meetings are informative to all who attend and the discussion is almost always lively.

The next one is scheduled for September 5. Suggestions for topics to cover are welcome.
