If you sell tangible goods, why not sell digital goods to compliment your offering? I’ve been selling digital goods since 2009 simply becuase it’s as automated a business as you can make it. The process looks something like this:
- Select a product to sell.
- You can create your own. Look at your skills and hobbies and ask yourself, what could I teach someone about my hobby/skill that they would pay to learn? Then build an e-book or similar to get your product into your customers hands.
- If you don’t want to make your own product, you can become an affiliate by hoping over to eJunkie or Clickbank to find products to sell. Try to stick to an area that you know that you could speak knowledgeably about and have a keen interest in. This will allow you to keep your sanity while you wait for your sales to roll in.
- Digital products can come in a variety of forms like: photographs, movies, templates, webinars, podcasts, movies, PDFs, e-books and mp3′s.
- Build a website. Some websites will help you Sell Digital Downloads better than others. You should be looking for a solution that can help you to:
- deliver the goods automatically and securely
- accept different forms of payment (credit card, PayPal, etc)
- host the files and ensure there is sufficient bandwidth for your products
- Start selling
- Have a friend visit your website and buy your product – you can refund them later. This will ensure that 1) your webpages work 2) you can accept payment 3) they can download or get access to your product without your involvement.
- Get the word out by sending your digital goods to bloggers in that space to see if they will run a post on your business.
- Get referrals from your first happy customers and use their testimonials to sell more units. Be sure to link their testimonial to their LinkedIn or similar profile to avoid it being anonymous praise.
The benefits of selling a digital good are obvious:
- no shipping costs
- more and more people are buying digital goods and every year people get more comfortable with the idea. Look at the growth of iTunes.
- instant delivery = providing instant gratification
- no inventory that can burn down or get stolen by disgruntled employees – however you still have to content with customers who may share your digital products. There are a few different methods for protecting yourself from this, but that is another post topic.
To me there is no better feeling than waking up to learn that last night, while you were sleeping, someone went to your website, purchase and received your product and you now have $50 in your PayPal account. Get started today to automate some of your income.
