In June, President Obama and Secretary of Homeland Security Napolitano announced that they would spare certain immigrants from deportation if they meet the general criteria of the DREAM Act and other criteria on a case by case basis. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) recorded videos in English and Spanish as a special message to DREAMers who will begin filing applications for deferred action (protection from deportation and work authorization) beginning on Aug. 15.
The videos give basic information on the deferred action application process, who does and does not qualify, and suggestions for getting more information, including community based organizations, Members of Congress, and the website www.DREAMrelief.org
The Senator and the Congressman (and Chicago Mayor Emanuel, the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights – www.icirr.org, and numerous Chicago groups and individuals) are holding an event at the Navy Pier in Chicago (9:00-3:00 p.m. CT, August 15) where everyone can get more information and DREAMers who qualify will be able to sign-up.
