South African police opened fire on striking platinum miners on Thursday killing at least a dozen, news agencies are reporting.
Workers began their strike on Friday over low pay, an act mine owner Lonmin dubbed “illegal.”
Reuters reports that the “scenes that drew comparisons with apartheid-era brutality.”
