Alien artifact? Historical documents? A small treasure? Speculation over what might be inside a 100-year-old package that’s set to be unsealed today in a small town in Norway abounds, according to Verdens Gang, a Norwegian newspaper.
Verdens Gang explains that the package has been kept in a museum in Gudbrandsdal and dates all the way back to August 26th, 1912. It carries a note from a man named Johan Nygard, specifying that it is not to be opened until 2012. As the first mayor in Sel kommune in Norway wrote on a package from 1912 “Can be opened in 2012′ .
The package weighs 3.1 kilos, is 40 cm wide, 28 cm deep and 9 cm thick, and is safely placed in one of the Gudbrandsdal museums. The package is sealed. Previously it has been placed in both archives and vaults.
The package, which has survived both World War 1 and World War 2, has been moved around in the city Otta several times. It’s just a coincidence that the package has not been lost. Several times it has actually been lost, but luckily it has always been found.
There are few clues about what the package might contain. What is known is that Nygard was involved in local politics and that he reportedly walked up to the mayor and handed him the package telling him that its contents would “benefit and delight future generations,” according to a video that was posted the Verdens Gang website.
Professor of history at the University of Oslo, Gro Hagemann, defines the period of the early 1900s a as a time of great changes in Norway.
- Norway was characterized by optimism and growth. In addition, the country had a newfound freedom and self-awareness after being an independent country in 1905, she says to VG.
Today,on August 24th, residents of the town will finally find out what’s inside. VGTV.no will be live broadcasting the opening of the Norway package on Friday at noon EST.
The mysterious package will be opened at 6 pm CEST (4pm GMT/UTC).

Wow, that was really boring. Some cloth banners, some letters, a couple newspapers, telegraphs, a few notebooks, some receipts. I suppose there could be some amazing info in there. The quote stating that the originator said that the contents would benefit future generations was I think a mistranslation. During the presentation, the statement was that the contents would be of INTEREST to future generations.
It was a bunch of old papers a banner from the king, and alot of old documents. They had’nt time to read any of the documents or letters. My opinion is that this is only interesting for historians.. I’ve got a crappy recording of the unpacking if anyone should want it. (doubt that anyone do)
You should post it on Before Its News. Anyone can contribute, just go to your dashboard which is linked next to your user name. Stick it on youtube then embed the vid in an article on Before Its News. That way we can all heckle it in the comments section.
I think this proves that time capsules are usually boring. Why are they boring? Because, nothing if value is put in them. It is always, documents, letters, crap they gave away at a festival. Never anything interesting like dirty pictures of George Washington anything else of controversy.
Is it Peter Noone that knows what the package contains? (sorry!)
Inside the package is a box, inside of that box is another box, inside of that box is a note that says,” Go to the Bank of England and open safety deposit box 485. Inside the safety deposit box is another box, inside that box is an envelope. Inside the envelope is a message that says, “Open the casket of John Doe buried in the United States in Arlington Cemetary. Inside the casket there is nothing but another envelope. Inside the envelope is this message. SHOP AT WAL-MART.
How did a 1914 news paper get in there if it was sealed in 1912?
Documents can reveal many secrets. Were they revealed?
Now that was really exciting- If this was packaged in 1912- how did that newspaper from 1914 get in there? Have not a clue what all those papers were- Nothng of interest, probably
it has newspapers in it from 1919, so it can’t date from aug 26,1912. you should have watched the video!
