Apple Loses Patent Case Against Samsung and Motorola in Germany

Many people thought that the story would be over after last month when Apple was awarded more than a billion dollars in a patent lawsuit against Samsung.  However, last months trial which took place in the shadows of the Apple headquarters was just one battle in an ongoing war that is playing out in various courts all over the world.  Different courts in different areas and jurisdictions have the ability to decide how these cases will be handled locally.

This week a German court has dismissed Apple Inc.’s lawsuit against Samsung and Google Inc.’s, ruling that there was no infringement of any patents, and if there was, the case was to weak to be ruled in Apple’s favor.  Prior to this decision, similar rulings have been made in Britain and the Netherlands.  The arbitrary nature of these rulings casts more doubt on the validity of these patents to begin with, and these recent legal battles have been forcing many in the industry to completely reconsider the nature of patents, copyright and intellectual property.
