Banking on 2012 subservience paying off in 2016

Bill Clinton’s rousing endorsement of Barack Obama at the Democrat convention last night, concealed the longstanding animosity he has held toward the man he is asking Americans to give a second term. It’s not that Clinton, who carries the street hustler nickname Slick Willy, actually believes the economy is turning around.  He acknowledged as much when he pleaded, “But too many people do not feel it yet. If you will renew the president’s contract, you will feel it. You will feel it.”

Then, like the word-parsing thespian he is known to be,  he dramatically paused, and added, “Folks, whether the American people believe what I just told you or not may be the whole election. I just want you to know I believe it. With all my heart I believe it.”

Know this about the classic Clintonesque performance.  It’s all about 2016. Bill desperately wants back in the White House.  The impeached and disbarred former president can’t get there on his own, but he’s paving the way for Hillary. And he will have an indebted Obama on the campaign trail, returning the grand favor he presented last evening.

In a “60 Minutes” interview given while pushing his autobiography nearly a decade ago, Clinton appraised himself with these words: “No one could fairly look at my political life and say I didn’t believe in anything.”

Who could argue with that?
