Rating for 2016: Obama’s America

When this writer heard that 2016: Obama’s America was on track to be the second most successful documentary of all time, my curiosity got the best of me. Obviously I would never pay to see a hit piece on our President, but the fact that my son works for the local movie theatre and I didn’t have to purchase a ticket made it easier to hold my nose and go. So here are some observations on this so-called documentary.

The director/narrator is Dinesh D’Souza, purportedly a far-right conservative author /commentator and self professed Obama hater who said that he hopes his movie will affect the 2012 election. 2016: Obama’s America is a right-wing Fox News/Tea Party wet dream filled with pejoratives like Muslim, Marxist, Socialist, anti-colonial, and anti-American. The intent of this film – which is more of an infomercial complete with doomsday scenarios, dark clouds and horror-movie music – is to scare the hell out of voters for the upcoming election. It is by far the best political fear-mongering movie ever made (I gave it one star just for that). Moreover, it is a despicable, unsubstantiated, anti-American, character assassination of the President of the United States. It’s believable only for people who already hate the President and most likely are fans ( a more apt term casualties) of the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Fox News.

The first 45 minutes oddly enough is about D’Souza talking about his own life. He talks about how he could have only had the type of success he enjoys now by coming to America. He draws parallels between he and the President (curiously megalomaniac though insignificant). He notes that they born the same year, went to ivy league schools, graduated from college the same year, and married the same year. The underlying message is that despite their similar backgrounds that he was a grateful American unlike the President Obama, who he portrays as an anti-colonialist, anti-Western, anti-American, and, for that matter, anti-white—basically a racist ingrate.
