(Before It's News)

Shortly after 1 p.m. EST someone by the Twitter handle “Anonymous Own3r” on Twitter claimed responsibility for shutting down millions of websites, blogs and email accounts hosted by GoDaddy.com.

At this time, Anonymous Own3r isn’t revealing his reasons for shutting down GoDaddy, only stating via Twitter:

“I’m taking godaddy down bacause (sic) well i’d like to test how the cyber security is safe and for more reasons that I can not talk now.

The hacker, who claims he (or she) is working alone, claims to be an official member and security leader of the infamous group of hackers known as “Anonymous.” He also claims to be the person solely responsible for previously taking four FBI websites tango down, and for taking down Facebook.

By all accounts across the Web, the cyber attack on GoDaddy has taken down millions of blogs, websites and email accounts, including those hosted on other sites that only registered their names with GoDaddy.com.

GoDaddy’s Twitter page is showing the following alert message:

“Status Alert: Hey, all. We’re aware of the trouble people are having with our site. We’re working on it,”

Keeping a close watch on AnonymousOwn3r’s Twitter stream, it appears he’s basking in the attention, only responding to those tweets which are praising his efforts and retweeting only those which sing his praises or show how much harm he’s caused across the Internet.

While AnonymousOwn3r has declined requests for an interview and so far has made no statements regarding the purpose for his attack, CBSNews.com says that @AnonOpsLegion, another Twitter account claiming responsibility, links the attack to GoDaddy’s alleged support of two unpopular bills the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act.

In response to the GoDaddy tango down attack, Hostgator.com is offering a 30% discount on webhosting with the coupon code “GoDaddyIsDown.”

While many are applauding AnonymousOwn3r for his ability to basically shut down half the Internet, who knows how many small business owners and charities he’s affected today.
