Hayden’s Note: The Educational Model, Personal Satisfaction, and Finding a Job

I was posting to Facebook earlier this morning and realized that I run a blog with over 200,000 readers, and yet never truly “blog.”
I’d like to get to know my readers better, and in return, I suppose I will let you get to know me better!
As many of you know, I am a former New Orleans police officer. After five years, including experiencing the social collapse and prolonged grid-down scenario during Hurricane Katrina, I no longer wanted to be a cog in the great machine of the police state. My political ideas had started to take hold in early 2007, and by the beginning of 2009, I realized I could not fulfill my role as a law enforcement officer and maintain a clear conscience.
I left New Orleans and moved to Oklahoma in order to pursue a dream of building an off-grid homestead using alternative architecture, such as shipping containers, and arrived here with a job in hand providing corporate and executive security within the oil and gas sector. I then moved into a senior position as an investigator, and recently separated from the company. Once more, I found myself not enjoying being a part of an industry and not being able to maintain a clear conscience while performing my duties, not to mention being stationed 200+ miles from home. While not necessarily indicative of the particular company I worked for, ground water contamination, bribery, and a trampling of property rights run rampant within the sector.
So, aside from that little ramble, here’s what was going through my head earlier this morning…
Having my coffee and then off I go to turn in applications! This ‘applying for jobs’ thing is strange; I’ve been employed full-time for the last 12 years and dropped out of college to pursue a police career which I did not enjoy. Here I am looking for a job for the first time in over a decade and everyone wants a Bachelor’s degree for the most mundane of occupations!
I attended only one year of college, and believe my street education, varied experience, logic, and skills far outweigh an overpriced diploma, taught by someone with no real world experience who merely attended a college for the same overpriced diploma. I think companies should simply offer a test tailored for the position and whoever scores the highest, wins the job. MUCH easier, don’tcha think?
I know quite a few recipients of Bachelors, and even Masters, that would not be where they are today but for financial aide, a random scholarship, or their parents. Many of them have no real cognitive abilities. Purchasing an “education” is not the same as learning or having the ability to process and learn new information. Our educational model is seriously flawed in the sense that repetition and memorization are rewarded instead of creative or critical thinking.
What a world. Oh well! Off I go into the jungle of applicants!
