Brazilian Man’s Family Thought he was Dead Until He Arrived at Own Funeral

A Brazilian family was shocked at the funeral of Gilberto Marcos Araujo when the man they whose life they were morning made an appearance, very much alive.

On Sunday, Jose Marcos Araujo was called into a city morgue in Alagoinhas to identify the body of a man believed to be his brother Gilberto.

The man in the morgue was a car washer like Gilberto and was about the same age and had similar physical features. The then unidentified man had been shot and killed and police called Jose, telling him his brother had been killed and was at the morgue.

Police inspector Roberto Lima has called the mistake “understandable,” pointing out how similar the men were.

On Monday, as Gilberto’s family prepared to lay him to rest, 41-year-old Gilberto Marcos Araujo arrived at his mother’s home. Apparently, a man on the street saw Gilberto and informed him that his family believed he was dead and were even attending his funeral later than day.

When he arrived at his own wake, people reportedly screamed, ran away, or even fainted.

Though many were initially startled, Marina Santana, Gilberto’s mother, says she is overjoyed to have the son she thought she’d lost.

The man in the casket, believed to be Gilberto, was later identified as Genivaldo Santos Gama. His body had since been returned to police, though additional information was not available.
