The Mexican government has confirmed the purchase of a more than $100 million plane for the country’s new president.
President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto will be flying in style when his plane is completed in 2014. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft was designed to carry between 250 and 290 passengers.
The current presidential plane carries far fewer passengers than the new Dreamliner, but also cost far less.
When the plane President Calderon is currently using was purchased, it cost roughly $43 million. The 787-9 costs $139 million or 1,781,027,600.36 pesos. On top of that, the Ecuador Times is reporting an estimated $100 million in safety and interior equipment will be added.
In addition to the presidential plane, AeroMexico has reportedly negotiated an order of 90 737-8 aircrafts and 10 of the 787 models.
Peña Nieto will officially take office on December 1, 2012.
