ABC News/Washington Post Poll: Majority of Americans Support a Path to Citizenship for Undocumented
Americans support a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States by 57 percent to 39 percent, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll released Wednesday.
Approval for the idea among Hispanics was 82 percent, compared with 51 percent among non-Latino whites.
More than seven out of every 10 Democrats agree with the measures, along with 69 percent of young adults.
The telephone survey was conducted between Nov. 7-11 among 1,023 adults nationwide and it has an error margin of plus/minus 3.5 percentage points.
Immigration reform has been one of the glaring omissions of President Barack Obama’s first term, yet Hispanics overwhelmingly voted for him on Nov. 6, helping to ensure another four years in the White House for the Democratic incumbent.
After the elections, the immigration issue has returned to the political arena and last week the nation’s top Republican elected official, House Speaker John Boehner, said the GOP-led chamber will work for comprehensive immigration reform.
