Anthropologists and novelists Michael & Kathleen Gear shared their research which has led them to conclude that modern civilization is doomed due to the historic cycle of climate change and overpopulation. Such cycles have played out over and over again during prehistory– ideal climate conditions lead to increased population, then when the weather worsens there is not enough food, war breaks out and societies collapse and devolve, Kathleen outlined.

The Earth goes through various orbits, such as when it moves further away from the sun, that lead to ice ages. We’ve managed to temporarily stave off an ice age because of agriculture production and the burning of fossil fuels, said Kathleen. The earliest North Americans, the Paleo-Indian “Clovis” faced a 400-year long dust bowl, and 67% of the male bodies showed traumatic injuries as though from war, Michael detailed.

Another issue they cited was deforestation– by cutting down the forest, carbon dioxide is raised and droughts are increased. A five-year drought in America’s midwest could, for example, severely reduce our food supply. The two foresee mass starvation, disease and warfare if population and deforestation are not brought under control.

The phrase “Earth Changes” was coined by the American psychic Edgar Cayce to refer to the belief that the world will soon enter on a series of cataclysmic events causing major alterations in human life on the planet.

This includes “natural events” (such as major earthquakes, the melting of the polar ice caps, a pole shift of the planetary axis, major weather events, solar flares and so on) as well as huge changes of the local and global social, economical and political systems.

Cayce

Cayce himself also made many prophesies of cataclysmic events involving the whole planet.[2][3] He claimed the polar axis would shift and that many areas that are now land would again become ocean floor, and that Atlantis would rise from the sea.[3] The belief that the California coast would slip into the sea—a common feature of Earth Changes predictions—originated with Cayce’s alleged prophecies.[citation needed] In more recent times, self-proclaimed psychic Gordon-Michael Scallion has issued a variety of prophecies centering on the concept of “Earth Changes” and publishes a monthly newsletter, The Earth Changes Report.

Various existential risks have the potential to destroy, or drastically restrict, human civilization; could cause human extinction; or even cause the end of Earth.[1] Severe events could cause the extinction of all life on the planet Earth, the destruction of the planet Earth, the annihilation of the solar system, to the annihilation of our galaxy or even the entire universe. Existential risks are distinguished from other forms of risk both by their scope, affecting all of humanity, and severity; destroying or irreversibly crippling the target.

Natural disasters, such as supervolcanoes and asteroids, may pose existential risks if sufficiently powerful, though man-made events could also threaten the survival of intelligent life on Earth, like catastrophic global warming,[2] nuclear war, or bioterrorism.

Despite the importance of existential risks, it is a difficult subject to study directly since humankind has never been destroyed before; while this does not mean that it will not be in the future, it does make modelling existential risks difficult, due in part to survivorship bias.

While individual threats, such as those posed by nuclear war or climate change, have been intensively studied on their own, the systematic study of existential risks did not begin until 2002

Some threats for humanity come from humanity itself.

Biotechnology could lead to the creation of a pandemic, chemical warfare could be taken to an extreme, nanotechnology could lead to grey goo in which out-of-control self-replicating robots consume all living matter on Earth while building more of themselves – in both cases, either deliberately or by accident.

It has also been suggested that in the pursuit of knowledge humanity might inadvertently create a device that could destroy Earth and our solar system.
Warfare and mass destruction

The scenarios that have been explored most frequently are nuclear warfare and a Doomsday device. It is difficult to predict whether it would exterminate humanity, but very certainly could alter civilizations in the event of a nuclear winter.

In the near future, anthropogenic extinction scenarios exist: global nuclear annihilation, overpopulation[1] or global accidental pandemic; besides natural ones: bolide impact and large scale volcanism or other catastrophic climate change. These natural causes have occurred multiple times in the geologic past although the probability of reoccurrence within the human timescale of the near future is infinitesimally small.
