The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 occurred near central Chile, in the Valparaiso area at 10:23 CST. The quake was reported to have rattled the O’Higgins, Maule and Santiago areas.
The earthquake measured 9.6 mile deep and occurred offshore some 37 miles southwest of San Antonio, Chile. Thus far no casualities or visible damage is being reported by Chilean authorities.
The Chilean Navy has ruled out the probability that a tsunami will occur.
