In the after math of Superstorm Sandy which crippled New York City and surrounding metropolitan and suburban areas, much discussion has taken place proposing the construction of a 5 mile long sea barrier which will protect New York harbor, the world’s busiest sea port, and the worlds most populated city.

Theweatherchannel.com had this to say; Prominent planners and builders say now is the time to think big to shield the city’s core: a 5-mile barrier blocking the entryway to New York Harbor, an archipelago of man-made islets guarding the tip of Manhattan … complete with locks for passing boats and a walkway for pedestrians — at the mouth of the Arthur Kill waterway between the borough of Staten Island and New Jersey.

The New York Times said; “Now, in the aftermath of the devastating storm, one question is front and center: Should New York armor itself with steel and concrete at a cost of billions of dollars?”

The Associated Press reported; The vast destruction wreaked by the storm surge in New York could have been prevented with a sea barrier of the type that protects major cities in Europe, some scientists and engineers say. “The time has come. The city is finally going to have to face t” said oceanography professor Malcolm J. Bowman at Long Island’s Stony Brook University.

ABCnews.go.com said;  In the wake of superstorm Sandy’s massive destruction to coastlines in the East Coast, many experts suggest that a sea wall barrier could have minimized the deadly storm surge that swept away homes and knocked out power to millions.
