By Davy V.
My daughter’s grandfather, Thomas VanDoren is an ex-Rochester, NY cop.
A dirty, rogue cop.
The kind of cop who brags about beating African-Americans and Latinos, in some cases throwing them down flights of stairs, while they were handcuffed.
In fact, in one of his sickest, most disturbing stories, he brags about stepping on the chest of a dying African-American man, who was calling God’s name in Rochester’s Hanover projects, while telling the man ”Die nigger, do you see Jesus now?”
A while back I had a conversation with Richard Vega, a retired Rochester, NY Police officer, and former FBI agent, who at the time of our talk was working as director of the City of Rochester office of Public Integrity.
When I mentioned to Mr. Vega, the name Thomas VanDoren, he put his head down as in shame, lifted it up and said to me, “Davy, Thomas VanDoren was an embarrassment to any officer who has ever donned a Rochester Police uniform, an embarrassment to the department.”
As happens with many relationships, my relationship with my daughter’s mother was doomed from the start.
The only good thing that came out of it was my beautiful daughter Isabella.
My daughter could not have two more opposite grandfathers.
One, a racist, ex-cop who has called me names such as Spic and Wetback.
The other, my Dad, Mario Vara, who passed away years ago.
My Dad was a community activist who for years fought against police misconduct, corruption and dirty cops like Thomas VanDoren.
And now, my daughter’s mother, Jamie VanDoren and her father are using their law enforcement connections to try to intimidate me and retaliate against me for being an involved, concerned father.
You see, my daughter’s mother has a long history of let’s just say not making the best decisions.
To say she has used poor judgment would be putting it mildly.
And lately, she has gotten into the habit of pawning my daughter off in order to meet up with random men.
The fact is, she is a hopeless romantic who has hooked up with all sorts of different men.
In fact, it can be said that I was her rebound.
When we met, she was in the middle of a nasty, all out war-of-a divorce.
A divorce which hurt only one innocent person.
Her son Alex, who was ripped from a home.
A home he grew up in.
His father, Dan Reisinger, flipped out the minute he learned his soon to be ex-wife was seeing a Latino. (My daughter’s mother is of Dutch and Irish decent.)
And he made the relationship hell.
From harassing me constantly, character defamation, even hiring a private eye to follow my every move, he did it all!
But, through it all I was there for my daughter’s mother.
My love for her was unconditional, and unwavering.
When her husband was trying to take her son from her, I was there.
When her husband was trying to ruin her life, I was there.
But most importantly, when she needed a shoulder to cry on, I was there.
But we all know that people change.
And the person whom I used to comfort and assure that everything would be alright, is now the same person who is retaliating against me.
Knowing my work as an activist and writer, my daughter’s mother has threatened to “set you up with the police and let them have their way with you”, simply because I refuse to allow her to endanger my daughter in any way with her poor judgment and decision making.
Just recently, while I was talking to my daughter, her mother rudely and abruptly snatched the phone away from her and my daughter started crying.
Then the phone went dead.
I tried to call several times and there was no answer.
I texted, but no reply.
I then called the police.
Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies went to check on my daughter’s welfare, but as is the case when I need any type of police assistance, I am treated completely different than the average citizen, as a result of who I am.
I spoke with Monroe County Sheriff Sgt. Steve Michaels, and expressed to him my concerns that my daughter’s mother was threatening to “set me up.”
I also expressed to Sgt. Michaels my concern that the fact that Thomas VanDoren is a retired law enforcement officer, posed a conflict of interest.
Update:
This is how the Monroe County, NY Sheriff’s department retaliates against me after I called them to check on my daughter’s welfare.
Proving that among police officers, it really is a “Good ol’ boys club.”
You see, my daughter’s grandfather is a retired Rochester, NY Police officer.
