If Overnight Productions has its way there will be no more ‘Machete’ movies.
Overnight Productions are the producers of the ‘Machete Kills’ film that Robert Rodriguez directs and their suit if successful could stop the release of the upcoming sequel. The lawsuit is against Robert Rodriguez’s production company Quick Draw Productions in Texas.
The lawsuit, filed earlier this week, claims Rodriquez failed to pay certain fees, keep transparent records and failed to obtain favorable tax credits – all things promised to Overnight Productions. Overnight Productions in turn was due to distribute the sequel.
The ‘Machete’ films tells the story of former federale Machete played by Danny Trejo. The sequel plot involves Machete working with the U.S. government against a drug lord and an arms dealer – played by Mel Gibson – from launching a missile. Rodriquez had already recruited Jessica Alba, Amber Heard, Michelle Rodriguez and Sofia Vergara for the sequel.
The first ‘Machete’ movie came out in 2010 to great success earning some $44 million at the box office.
If Overnight Productions is successful in court it will cut its ties with Rodriguez and he will lose his rights to make the sequel. The creative rights to ‘Machete’ are owned by Overnight Productions’ Rick Schwartz who contracted with Rodriquez earlier this year granting Rodriquez the rights to do the sequel.
