A powerful snowstorm hit Japan’s northernmost Hokkaido prefecture on Tuesday toppling electric cables and power pylons that left some 42,000 households in the cities of Noboribetsu and Muroran, and seven other municipalities without electricity, Japanese media reported.
The weather turned rough in Hokkaido after a cold air mass moved over it with gusty winds of around 145 kilometers per hour slamming the prefecture.
Noboribetsu was the worst hit with the city blanketed by 18 centimeters of snow and the temperature plummeting as low as minus 5.7 degrees Celsius early on Wednesday.
Hokkaido Electric Power Company was trying to restore power supply in the affected areas by bringing generators from around the prefecture. But the company says it may take until Thursday to bring back normalcy …. http://www.rttnews.com
