Unlike her old, staunchly Democratic district, Sutton is now running in a Republican leaning district against freshman GOP Rep. Jim Renacci—and polls show her in big trouble. Internal polls on both sides show Renacci ahead, with a lead that continues to grow. In addition to her generally weak fundraising, which prevented her from airing a single television ad until mid-October, after voting began in Ohio (Renacci began airing ads in August), Sutton’s liberal voting record is clearly her greatest liability but Ohio voters seem most troubled by the perception that she is both out of touch and playing on the fringes with out-of-bounds ethics.
Sutton isn’t just a rank and file Democrat, she’s one of the most liberal politicians in America. According to the American Conservative Union, her record is more liberal than Nancy Pelosi’s. She has an “F” rating from the NRA and an equally as poor rating from business groups like NFIB and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. With a record that bad, it’s no surprise to see Sutton desperately digging for distractions while ignoring her own record of paving her own pockets instead of paving the future of fellow Buckeyes.
Aided by millions in outside spendings, Sutton and her friends have launched an all-out attack on Renacci, going so far as to slander Renacci’s wife, claim that his campaign is funded by Chinese prostitutes, and were caught creeping around outside his home with a video camera. Even traditionally liberal leaning media outlets have slammed Sutton & Co. for these sick and desperate tactics—and it now it appears she and her allies have chucked a boomerang with their latest round of attacks, falsely asserting that Jim Renacci ran for Congress to enrich himself (in reality, Renacci gave up a very lucrative business career to run for congress in 2010). He also has long history of enormous civic and charitable support for the community and working families he comes from.
At an October 10 debate with Renacci in Cleveland, Sutton leveled a muddled and vague attack on Renacci, implying that he went to congress to “enrich himself”. She then goes on to state “That’s not who I am and that’s not who I will ever be.” It appears however that exactly who Betty Sutton is. However, as it turns out, Sutton is the one who has some explaining to do, as it appears she’s been the one attempting to enrich herself with her votes in Congress.
After reviewing Sutton’s personal financial disclosure, voters discovered that Sutton is not only heavily invested in companies that ship jobs overseas, including companies that made CNN’s “Exporting America” list, but she also voted to spend billions in taxpayer money to bailout companies she herself is invested in. That’s right, Betty Sutton voted to spend hundreds of billions in taxpayer funds and borrowed money from China to bailout companies that she owns stock in. Buckeye values or a poke in the eye; you decide.
When it comes to politicians enriching themselves on the back of taxpayers, it doesn’t get any clearer than that. Once Sutton removes her foot from her mouth, we look forward to hearing her explain herself to voters on this one. Grab some popcorn, this could get interesting and remember one thing Ms. Sutton,
Buckeyes are highly discerning and exceedingly Patriotic. Be cautious about casting baseless accusations when you can’t even explain your own China outsourcing, let alone a campaign fueled by desperation not voters.
