TOKYO, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) — Shinzo Abe, Japan’s premier-in- waiting, said Friday that he will seek to relocate the U.S. Futenma base to a less populated place within Okinawa Prefecture, according to Japan’s Kyodo News Agency.
Abe said at a press conference held in Yamaguchi Prefecture that he will try to gain supports from local community so as to move the air base to Okinawa’s coastal Henoko area in Nago city, where is less populated than its current location.
The plan was existed for years under the rule of the Liberal Democratic Party, but it was interrupted when the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) swept to power in 2009.
However, the DPJ complicated the thorny issue and made then DPJ Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama resigned for the very issue as he failed to realize his words that to remove the base.
Abe also said he will try to ask for supports from various communities to ease Okinawa’s burden while maintaining deterrence.
The issue of relocating the Futenma base has been an obstacle between Japan’s central government and local residents, who want the U.S. base moved out of Okinawa.
