Famed Architect Oscar Niemeyer, 104, in Grave Condition in Brazil
Centenarian Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer is in grave condition, doctors at Rio’s Samaritan Hospital said Wednesday.
The 104-year-old father of modern architecture in Brazil entered the hospital Nov. 2.
Niemeyer’s condition has worsened in recent days, Dr. Fernando Gjorup said in the latest medical bulletin.
The patient is now breathing with the aid of a respirator and is under sedation, according to the bulletin.
Niemeyer, winner of Spain’s prestigious Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts in 1989, was born on Dec. 15, 1907 and, despite his advanced age, remained professionally active up until his current bout of poor health.
The acclaimed architect and avowed communist, who a half century ago designed the main buildings of Brasilia, the nation’s futuristic capital city, is known for the flowing curves of his reinforced concrete structures.
