Gap between rich, poor widens in Germany: Report

A recent report says that the number of people at risk of poverty has reached a record high in Germany.

“Last year, 15.1 percent of Germans were at risk of living in poverty, the highest level since Germany’s reunification,” said the National Equality Association in its annual report released on Thursday.

“The gap between the rich and poor continues to widen… lower-income people, who earn 60 percent below the median salary, face the danger of poverty” it added.

The Association also called for a million-euro plan to fight poverty in Europe’s biggest economic powerhouse.

This comes after Ulrich Schneider, the head of the German Association, earlier this week criticized the government for boasting about Germany’s low unemployment rate and strong economy, saying that political parties and their policies widened the gap between the poor and rich in the country.

Reports say that economic inequality in Germany is seen all around the country in rich states in the south and the states in eastern and western parts of Germany, which are not rich.
