Spaniards march against austerity

THOUSANDS of Spaniards have demonstrated in Madrid, Barcelona and other cities against the government’s pension cuts and other austerity policies as it tries to cut its deficit by a third.
Spain’s two large trade union confederations, CCOO and UGT, and other groups had called rallies in 55 cities.

Retired people need “stability and security,” CCOO leader Ignacio Fernandez Toxo said. He accused Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s conservative People’s Party of betraying its election promises.

The government, which is struggling to cut the budget deficit from 9.4 per cent of gross domestic product in 2011 to 6.3 per cent this year, announced recently that it will not raise pensions sufficiently to compensate for inflation in 2013.
