National Review’s ‘The Corner’ runs an excellent article titled McCain’s Truce. The commentary, written by Frank Cannon and Jeffrey Bell questions John McCain’s newly articulated [but we suspect, long-held position] on abortion.
The article contains this observation: “On abortion, McCain apparently believes Republicans should maintain a broadly pro-life position. But when considering what to do to protect the unborn, whom pro-lifers by definition believe to be innocent human beings, no action plan should be adopted, much less executed. McCain implies that the very subject of protecting the unborn should be avoided. If it is brought up, we should admit to being pro-life, but emphasize how much we respect the opinions of those who believe unborn babies deserve no protection whatsoever.”
Seeing Red AZ took McCain to task over his advice to Republicans concerning winning future elections, articulated during last week’s Fox News’ Sunday interview with host Chris Wallace. Regarding abortion, a topic he brought up, McCain advised “Leave the issue alone,“ claiming we have to have a “bigger tent.” McCain went on to say that he “respects the views” of abortion advocates.
Being disappointed in the duplicitous John McCain is not difficult. He hasn’t a conservative bone in his body. So we were not as charitable to the hypocritical U.S. Senator as authors Cannon and Bell. They questioned his position as “a man of honor.” As conservatives and Arizonans, we have never labored under that illusion.
