(Before It's News)

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez who was reelected in October will not be able to attend his inauguration ceremony, scheduled to take place January 10, as he recovers from cancer surgery in Cuba, government officials said Tuesday. The swearing-in will be postponed. “(Chavez’s) medical team has recommended that the postoperative recovery should extend past January 10,” Vice President Nicolas Maduro said in a letter read out to the National Assembly.

The condition of President Chavez, who has undergone his fourth cancer surgery, has been fueling tensions with the opposition which questions whether the inauguration can be legally postponed. Opposition leader Henrique Capriles said earlier Tuesday that the Supreme Court should rule in the disagreement between the opposition and Chavez’s government. He claimed the constitution is clear that the current presidential term ends on January 10.
