A new survey conducted by pro-privacy campaign group Big Brother Watch has found that an alarming 68% of British people are “very concerned” about Google’s practices which frequently threaten our privacy.
The survey, conducted between February 15 and February 17 was by managed by ComRes and interviewed 2,050 British adults via the web.
The survey also found that than seven in ten Brits support an investigation into Google’s data policies and the European data watchdogs made the right decision to investigate the company’s controversial privacy policy, which came into force in March of last year and shared all user data across multiple platforms, including Google search, Gmail and Youtube.
In fact, Google merged the privacy policies of around 60 products into one single policy and prevented users from opting out.
Big Brother Watch director Nick Pickles said:
“The message from consumers is clear: regulators were right to investigate Google’s new privacy policy and now they need to do more to force the company to comply with the law.”
“People increasingly feel their interests and privacy are being ignored by large companies and advertisers motivated by profit. If regulators don’t get a grip of the situation we risk people losing trust in the digital economy and feeling they are not in control of their personal information. The long term consequences of such a collapse in trust would be dire.”
A Google spokesman defended the policy:
“Our privacy policy respects European law and allows us to create simpler, more effective services. We have engaged fully with the CNIL throughout this process, and we’ll continue to do so going forward.”
