(LOCAL 10) A Broward Sheriff’s Office detective testified against his former partner who is accused of stealing cash in a criminal case.
Frank Canales testified in the trial of Brent Wooddell on Wednesday.
“No police officer ever wants to be put in that situation,” Canales said.
Canales said he saw Wooddell take $200 during a case.
“I just turned my head and I saw Det. Wooddell had two $100 bills in his palm,” he said.
Canales informed internal affairs, which set up a sting operation on Wooddell. Matthew Fryer, a Miami-Dade Police Department sergeant, acted as a drug dealer during the sting.
“My role was I was a doper with 1,000 oxycontin placebo pills,” testified Fryer.
Broward Sheriff’s Office video showed Wooddell arresting Fryer, who also had $7,340 cash in a bag. When Wooddell turned in the cash, there was only $6,000, prosecutors say.
“All of that money should have went in with this property receipt when he took it down to property and he didn’t,” said Broward Sheriff’s Office supervisor Valerie Devlin.
Wooddell says he suspected it was a sting all along and planned to return the money at the end of his shift.
