China’s health ministry has confirmed that two people are critically ill with H5N1 avian flu. A 21 year old woman and 31 year old man, both from the city of Guiyang in Guizhou Province have no epidemiologic  links and neither has any links to poultry that the families know of.

To date there has been little supportive evidence of H5N1 presenting in people who do not live in close proximity to or handle poultry. Thus far China has had 45 cases of H5N1 28 of which were fatal.

Two cases occurring during Chinese New Year celebrations could not have had worst timing. tens of millions of people are travelling to and from celebrations with relatives all over the country. The raises the risk of the infection passing person to person exponentially as people crowd onto buses and trains and transport hubs are filled with tens of thousands of extra people.

The relatives of both patients are being closely monitored according to Hong Kong’s  Centre for Health Protection (CHP).
