CARACAS, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) — Cancer-stricken President Hugo Chavez is still suffering from respiratory problems and the tendency of that condition “has not been favorable”, said Venezuelan Information Minister Ernesto Villegas Thursday night.

The statement read by the minister on TV said the president will receive more treatment for the breathing problems.

In addition, the minister said medical treatment for Chavez’s cancer is continuing without “significant adverse effects for now.”

Chavez, 58, returned home on Monday after a two-month cancer treatment in Cuba and he is being treated at the Caracas military hospital.

Except for a few photos released by the government last week, Chavez has not been seen or heard of since Dec. 11, 2012 when he underwent his fourth round of cancer surgery in Cuba. Chavez was first diagnosed with cancer in June 2011.

The government has said that it was hard for Chavez to speak because he has been fitted with a tracheal tube due to a post-operative respiratory infection.

Chavez, elected for a third term in October 2012, has missed the scheduled inauguration ceremony on Jan. 10, which has been delayed indefinitely, raising hackles of many in the opposition.
