Immigrant Stopped by NC Sheriff Under Investigation for Racial Profiling Will Not Be Deported
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement suspended Tuesday the deportation of an undocumented immigrant who came to ICE’s attention after a traffic stop by a North Carolina sheriff’s department that is under investigation for racial profiling.
Isaias Valles, the 25-year-old father of two U.S.-born children, was supposed to leave the country on Friday, but ICE decided to apply procedural discretion in the case.
“We will work with the immigrant’s attorneys to reopen the case and close it administratively in immigration court,” ICE spokesman Vincent Picard said in a statement sent to Efe.
“Our priority is to identify and deport criminals who break the law, are a threat to national security, those who have recently crossed the border and have not obeyed our laws,” Picard said.
Valles was detained last April in Burlington by an Alamance County sheriff’s deputy while driving his brother’s car.
The deputy asked for Valles’ driver’s license, which he didn’t have, so as a consequence he was jailed and his deportation process begun.
“This is good news and we’ll tell the lawyers to continue the process, but just like this there are many cases of Hispanics jailed unjustly in Alamance,” Jose Rico, spokesman for the NC Dream Team, told Efe.
The Justice Department has launched an investigation against the Alamance sheriff’s department for its history of unjust, discriminatory arrests of Latinos.
