LATINO BLOTTER: Man Gets 7 Years in Prison for Bringing Loaded Gun to Subway

A man in New York was handed a 7 years jail sentence after jumping a subway barrier, but it wasn’t just his failure to pay that landed him behind bars.

Last year, Ruben Sanabria, 37, was caught jumping the turnstile at New York’s 14th Street subway station in Manhattan to avoid paying the $2.25 fare.

He was spotted jumping the barrier, but when officers ordered him to put him hands against the wall, he instead took off down the platform. While running, Sanabria was spotted throwing a handgun to the ground. One officer grabbed the weapon, while another caught up to and arrested Sanabria. It was discovered he had been illegally carrying a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson semiautomatic firearm, and was also found to be carrying additional ammo and a holster.

According to the New York Post, he pled guilty to criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and was facing up to 15 years in jail.

On Monday, Sanabria was sentenced to 7 years in jail and 42 months of post-release parole.
