Anything and everything anytime
A few years ago Crystal Developers wanted to build a highrise residential building on the block behind the Manitoba Club. The block is surrounded by Broadway, Assiniboine, Fort and Main Street. The well-heeled members of the elitist Manitoba Club started an effort to block the building’s construction. It was called Friends of Upper Fort Garry.
The fatcats at the club didn’t want people living in a highrise looking down at them as they sat drinking cocktails on the club’s back lawn. So one thing led to another and now we have been told that the Club, along with provincial government funding, are going to construct a Heritage Park and Interpretive Centre on the site. Other than knocking 2 buildings down and putting a fence around the site, nothing has changed.
No park, just empty old unused parking lots. The capitalists at the Manitoba Club are too busy checking in with their stock brokers and researching investments to put time and money into a non-profit project.
Empty Lots
The Club has a $3,000 entrance fee and various other yearly membership fees. Some of the most talented chefs in Manitoba ply their wares at the Club.
Artist impressions of the completed Heritage Park.
Nice images from the future maybe? But right now the site looks like the photo below.
