Spaniard David Ferrer Wins Second Capo Claro Tournament

Spain’s David Ferrer defeated Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the final of the Copa Claro tournament to win his second straight title in Buenos Aires.

The 30-year-old Ferrer became the first player in 35 years to repeat at the ATP 250 event in Argentina’s capital, matching the feat of Argentine legend Guillermo Vilas.

“I don’t think about breaking records, just about improving day after day, and I will surely value what I won more when I retire from tennis,” Ferrer said.

The world No. 4, who won a title earlier this year on the hard courts in Auckland, dominated the clay-court event at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club and helped keep the title in Spanish hands for five consecutive years.

Spain’s Tommy Robredo won in 2009, Juan Carlos Ferrero took the title in 2010, Nicolas Almagro was victorious in 2011 and Ferrer now has wins in 2012 and 2013 on his resume.

“Tennis has smiled on me and I don’t know why. I never thought in my life that I would hit that number,” Ferrer said, referring to the 20 titles he has won on the ATP Tour.

Ten of the Spaniard’s titles have come on clay, eight on hard courts and two on grass.
