Thursday’s elimination on American Idol surprised many, as the singer expected to be sent home was not even in the bottom three.
On Wednesday, contestants took on The Beatles, each singing a song by the iconic group. Lazaro Arbos sang “In My Life” but failed to impress the judges. Devin Velez, however, received praise from the panel of judges and it appeared he was far more safe from elimination than Arbos.
The next night’s show would prove that assumption incorrect, as Arbos’ massive fan base saved him, and Velez didn’t have the votes and joined Amber Holcomb and Paul Jolley in the bottom three.
In the end, Velez made it to the top 8, as Paul Jolley was sent home after the judges could not reach a unanimous decision, therefore did not use their one save of the season.
One who knows all about the importance of the save is last season’s Jessica Sanchez. Though she did not win her season, Sanchez is doing well. On Thursday, she and Ne-Yo took the stage to perform their single “Tonight” which got everyone dancing and received a standing ovation from the judges.
