Alfredo Guevara, Founder of Cuban Film Institute, Dies at 87

Alfredo Guevara, founder of the Cuban Film Institute and president of the International Festival of the New Latin American Cinema of Havana, died here Friday of a heart attack, state-run media said. He was 87.

Guevara, one of the best-known intellectuals on the island after the victory of the 1959 revolution and a long-time associate of Fidel Castro, had a long career as a promoter of Cuban and Latin American movies and was the author of numerous books and essays.

He began working in movies in the 1950s as a production assistant for such directors as Manuel Barbachano and Luis Buñuel.

He took part in the founding of the Our Times Cultural Society, an institution that brought together the avant-garde of Cuban intelligentsia.

During his 30 years as head of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry, he used film to create an environment of great artistic creativity in the realms of music, the plastic arts, literature and dance.

In the 1970s he founded the Cinematheque of Cuba, the most important archive of the Latin American movie industry, and the Cine Cubano magazine.
